Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Rating: PG
W/C: 663
Warnings: Death!Fic with Potential!Reincarnation
Disclaimer: Merlin does not belong to me, neither does Arthur, even if he is hot :p
Summary: Uther discovers Merlin's magic.
A/N: I didn't intend for my first posted fic to be Death!Fic lol. But this demanded to be written last night, so I decided to do as I was told, as that doesn't happen too often. This is unbeta'd so all mistakes are mine. I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Prophecy
Arthur stood helpless as they marched him away.
‘Father you cannot do this! He has done nothing but protect me, he is loyal to the crown… he is my friend,’ finished Arthur softly.
‘Your friend!’ Uther exclaimed in disgust ‘He is a servant, and a sorcerer, he has broken the laws of Camelot and must be punished accordingly.’ The ring of finality was unmistakeable. Arthur recognised the stubborn look on the king’s face and knew that nothing would change his mind. He turned to leave the Great Hall.
‘Oh, Arthur, I expect you to stand beside me at the execution, so everyone knows where your allegiance lies.’ There was a heavy warning in Uther’s tone; do as I say, or the consequences will be dire. Arthur continued to walk from the room without response.
The day of the execution dawned, bright and clear. All Arthur’s attempts to see him or help him escape had failed. Uther had placed only the more senior soldiers, unwavering in their support of the old king, to guard the dungeon. Gwen had been able to deliver a message, but the only response that was returned was, ‘tell him it’s alright.’ Arthur dressed himself, with dread lying like lead within his bones. His chambers seemed large and echoing, without the usual, lively presence. Arthur sat for a long time, head in hands, unable to bring himself to join the court. Eventually, a hesitant knock sounded from the door.
‘Come.’
‘My Lord, the king asks for your presence on the royal balcony,’ the messenger stammered.
‘Very well.’
Arthur waited until the frightened servant had backed out of the room, before picking himself up and making his way out to the corridor.
The crowd in the courtyard below were unusually silent. It appeared to Arthur that nothing was even in motion, as if the guards and the pyre, were all part of some grotesque tableau. Far away, the ceremonial drums started to beat. Panic rose unbidden in Arthur’s throat. His heart pumping loudly in his ears as the prisoner was led unresisting to the pyre. He was pushed up onto the piled logs, so that his hands could be tied from behind, around the wooden post.
One of the guards stepped forward, a torch in his hand, and bent to light the edge of the pyre.
‘This servant of the Royal Household, for the crime of sorcery, has been sentenced to death by burning.’ Uther’s strong voice rang out in judgement.
As the flames licked higher, nausea overtook Arthur. His hands flexed into fists as he was filled with rage and despair. He opened his mouth to speak, to do something.
‘Arthur’
‘It’s alright.’
Arthur’s eyes became glassy as he listened to a voice he knew with certainty; was heard only by him.
‘Don’t fight your father on this. It is not your destiny. You will be a great king, but for that to happen, you must remain here at Camelot, which your father will never allow if you interfere now.’
‘I love you, my friend’
A ghost of a chuckle whispered past Arthur’s ear.
‘See, it wasn’t a mistake, it was merely my heart recognising yours. As it will again. It is not over for us, Arthur Pendragon. It never will be.’
The voice was growing fainter. Arthur watched in horror as the figure was obscured by the flames. He grasped for what little control he had left, to keep from breaking apart.
‘I will see you again, many, many years hence. There shall lie our true destiny.’
At this the voice went silent, and the flames leapt suddenly high into the air. Trembling, Arthur closed his eyes and locked the prophecy deep within his soul. He briefly turned to face his father.
‘When I am king, things will be different.’
With this vow on his lips, he returned to the castle. It would have to do, until his real reason for living, was once more back at his side.

on 2009-01-28 10:08 pm (UTC)What has been done can not be undone. You can only hope to do better in the future. *nod, nod* :P
Also don't forget the balance of the world, ying-yang, two sides of a coin, bla, bla, bla, tragedy and happiness walk hand in hand, bla, bla, bla. So you've made a tragedy now you need to make a happy ending. (so says my cat(named Picolo(don't ask)))

on 2009-01-29 02:21 am (UTC)That probably shouldn't be my reaction to something so tragic, but I just can't help it. Destiny will not be thwarted! I have spent to much time listening to the slash dragon.
